Qumra 2023 highlights
Qumra, which means “camera” in Arabic, blends together a creative workshop, co-production market, and festival elements. The event, now at its ninth edition, was established by the Doha Film Institute (DFI) to help foster first and second works, mostly by Arab directors and to create curated networking opportunities between the Arab and international film communities.
I had the privilege to have fruitful discussions, ongoing inspiration, fascinating connections and interactions with great mentors such as Lynne Ramsay, Tala Hadid, Jihan El-Tahri and industry experts such as editor Sebastian Sepulveda, producer Catherine Dussart, programmer Teresa Cavina, Rasha Salti (Arte), Reem Haddad (Al Jazeera English), Anas Abd al Wahab (Al Jazeera Documentary), Imogen Fares (Mubi), Wendy Ettinger (Chicken & Egg), Dominic Davis (Sundance), Elizabeth Radshaw (Hot Docs Funds), and many film festivals key professionals from IDFA, FID Marseille, Sheffield Doc Fest, Points North Institute, Sunny Side of the Doc.
